Today we read A Very Special Snowflake by Don Hoffman.  For our math and cognition activity, we got in small groups and did shape recognition.  Our friends glued different shapes to their letter of the week "Q". Ms. Megan asked each friend what their favorite shape is.  For sensory and science, our friends looked at pictures of different snowflakes and tried to draw their own for drawing exploration.  We all practiced the ASL sign for "snowflake" for literacy and fine motor as a large group.  Handouts will be sent home so you can practice together.

Today we read First Snow by Bernette Ford and illustrated by Sebastien Braun. For our math and cognition group, we counted how many icicles were on a card and recognized what number corresponded to the number of icicles. We then used our fine motor skills to cut out the letter 'Q' for our letter of the week creation. During our sensory and science activity, we did a science recipe called instant ice. In our instant ice experiment we took ice cubes and put them on top of an upside-down bowl and then took very cold water that was almost frozen and slowly poured it onto the ice cubes. The water made the ice cubes stick to the bottom of the bowl.

We had a great day welcoming everyone back from winter break!  This week we are learning about snow and ice.  For music, we danced, sang songs and played with music activity toys. Today, we read The Smallest Snowman by Sarah Fisch and illustrated by Jim Durk.  For math and cognition, we did snowflake matching in small groups.  For sensory and science, we did paint exploration.  We dipped Q-tips in white paint and dotted snow on our snowmen.  We also put googly eyes and small beads on for buttons.  For literacy and fine motor, we listened to Footprints in the Snow by Mei Matusoka on tape as a large group.  The kids enjoyed being able to play outside on this beautiful day!
