We had another visit from Mrs. Ashley today for our gardening unit. She read us The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and then we sorted the food from the story into the different food groups she has been talking with us about. We even got to pass around a "bug ball" and name bugs we could find in our garden. Before Mrs. Ashley left, we checked out our growing pumpkin plants and took turns watering them. For our first small group activity, we explored a "spider web" in the motor room by moving under, over, and through the tangled yarn maze. Next, we practiced our scissor skills by cutting "spider web" yarn in the sensory bin as the second small group. Then, for the final activity, we identified numbers on spider webs and used one to one correspondence to add fingerprint spiders to the webs. We had a great Tuesday!

While at circle time, we discussed our new theme, which is Eric Carle. We talked about what an author and illustrator does, as well as talked about our favorite stories that Carle created. Then, we listened to Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? For our first small group activity, we identified the animals from the book and the shape that surrounded them. We also used dry erase markers to trace those shapes. We did a story-retelling activity in the second group by putting the phrases from the story in order and matching the animal pictures to their color words. Then, as the final activity, we explored "brown bear slime." We used our senses to describe the material and tried to use our fingers and tweezers to remove the "bear hair" from the goop. It was a fantastic Monday!

Our week was short but sweet! At circle time, we read Mickey's Campout. As our first small group activity, we used common camping tools, flashlights, to locate and identify letters around our classroom. We took turns playing a vocabulary game in the second group. We chose one common camping picture, and after identifying it, we tried to find its match. Then, all together, we made natural bracelets. We know that camping happens outdoors so we travelled to the grassy area to find flowers and other natural decorations for our sticky contact paper bracelets. We enjoyed the morning outdoors before the real heat sets in this afternoon. On our trip we found several bugs and even checked out our pumpkin plants that are growing so well! It was a fun Friday!
