Today we read I See Summer by Charles Ghigna. Our Summer themed activities started out with "What Melts in the Sun?" First, we let the children find broken crayons and put different colors in a muffin pan. We also made a special muffin pan with marshmallows and chocolate. Later, they will be melted and each child will have a tasty Summer treat! They will also get to take home a muffin shaped multicolor crayon when they harden. They will discover cause and effect of items melting in the sun from this fun science and sensory activity. For math and cognition, we did a watermelon seed count activity. The children counted the number of watermelon seeds and picked the number out of three that matched the amount of seeds. For language and literacy, we did a picnic blanket letter matchboard. They picked a red square with a letter on it and found it on the board to match.
